ANUC Holds Workshop on AERONET Data Retrieval and Analysis.

Posted On:  16-Jun-2016

Preceding the SSSTA2016 conference and as a follow up to the installation of the Sun Photometer as part of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between All Nations University College (ANUC) and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) was a one-day workshop on AERONET Data Retrieval and Analysis, conducted on Monday, the 30th of May 2016.

Key resource persons for the workshop included Dr. Richard Damoah and Dr. Ally Toure both of NASA, Goddard Space Flight Centre (GESTAR, NASA, GSFC) as well as Prof. Antony Kinyua of Morgan State University, USA. Twenty-Six (26) participants consisting of ANUC members of staff and students were present.

AERONET is a network of ground-based Sun Photometers designed to measure atmospheric aerosol properties. It facilitates ground-based data acquisition as well as validate satellite-based aerosol measurements. NASA’s scientific goals include a more detailed understanding of global atmospheric phenomena with a particular focus on climate research and the assessment of air quality.

The students were particularly excited about this programme and many expressed their desire to take advantage of this opportunity to carry out climate change related atmospheric research. They also requested that many more programmes of this kind be organised.
